The sword grows along with Shang as it evolves when it is provided higher quality ore, gaining higher strength and intelligence. This function is provided due to the lack of high level blacksmiths to forge weapons. In reality Sword is Shang, they are one in the same.
The sword was named Sword as Sword wanted to be known as the best of his kind and when someone thinks of the best sword they will think of Sword.
Sword was taught by Gleipnir which helped it gain intelligence and speed up its learning.
In Chapter 740 of the Novel, the concepts used to create 'sword' were revealed which are:
